British Science Week 2023 at HBAED
At the end of last half term, HBAED staff and students enjoyed an array of exciting science-based activities to celebrate British Science Week.
The theme this year was ‘connections’ and there were lots of fun and engaging activities that students enjoyed taking part in both inside and outside of their science lessons.
Science Week blasted off with a thought-provoking and engaging session for Year 7 on the unlikely connection between film making and science with demonstrations of pyrotechnics and camera angles. As one student remarked: “I think film-making is the career least connected to science”. By the end of the session, students had a new-found appreciation for the behind-the-scenes activities of our favourite action-packed films.
Activities for Science Week continued for Key Stage 3 with practical projects. In line with this year’s theme, Year 7 and 8 students constructed their own circuits using pencil lead and considered the applications of this in new technologies for smartphones and other devices. Year 9 connected physics and chemistry knowledge to perform an electrolysis on various substances which they will encounter as they progress to Key Stage 4.
Some built on their Active Citizenship traits of resilience and confidence to hone their engineering skills, building their own miniature functioning carousels and gliders. Making connections between the forces on their gliders they refined their designs and were able to adjust the flight of the glider and test different flight characteristics. Others made connections between wildlife in various ecosystems, learning the hidden connection and interdependence between different species.
Students in Years 7-10 enjoyed assemblies introducing them to the array of STEM careers with some fun and engaging demonstrations to conclude the Science Week activities.
