Mental Health - Supporting Students With Exam Stress
At Harris Dulwich Boys we take the mental health of our students very seriously and work with external agencies such as kooth.com to support the needs of our pupils.
For example, we identify and support Year 11 pupils experiencing exam stress and our mental health lead, Christine St. Ange, has organised workshops to support vulnerable pupils.
We invited Kooth to come to speak to some of our students about the free online mental wellbeing community provided by the NHS for young people. KOOTH delivered sessions on general mental health and another session for Year 11 on managing exam stress. This session helped students to recognise signs and symptoms of exam stress and explore ways that can help overcome it.
What students said...
What students said about the exam stress session:
- "They talked about different coping strategies for exams such as ‘the stress bucket’ which you have to make holes in, to help manage your stress, and that made a lot of sense to me."
- "Well executed and informative, it gave me clarity regarding different ways that I can relieve stress."
- "I liked the idea of a 'Stress Bucket' to help manage emotions."
- "I found it informative and helpful."
What students said about the general mental health session:
- "If you feel stressed or depressed, you can go on Kooth to talk to someone, and it can be anonymous. This is reassuring for me."
- "Whenever you need help there is always someone waiting to hear from you - this can be family, friends or Kooth."
- "Don't listen to people telling you to 'man up' or 'men don't cry'."
- "I've learnt not to keep your emotions inside and share your mental health with someone."
"Nothing is more important than the wellbeing and happiness of our pupils," says Harry Ingham, our Designated Safeguarding Lead. "We provide a wide range of provision aimed at promoting positive mental health. The superb workshops delivered by Kooth have contributed to this and we looking forward to inviting them in to support our boys again in the future."
