Football - HBAED 4 UAE 4 (UAE win on penalties)
The Year 8 football team went out of the South London cup on Wednesday evening, losing cruelly on penalties after a thrilling cup tie against UAE.
HBAED were 2-0 down at half time. Kimani came on up front and made an instant impact, racing onto a long ball from CB Jerry before calmly finishing under pressure from the out-rushing opposition goal keeper. Dylan (midfield) then burst through the defence and rounded the goalkeeper before getting to the byline and unselfishly squaring the ball for Kimani to smash the equaliser into an empty net! 2-2.
Outstanding saves
From kick off we conceded immediately to make it 2-3. And were fortunate to not be further behind but for two outstanding saves from Dylan (GK) and a dramatic goal line clearance by Immanuel.
When pushing for the equaliser we conceded on the break, to make it 2-4. At this point myself and PC Marcus feared the worst based on prior experiences but our boys had other ideas. Idris, Dylan, Yahya, Jesse, Antonio, Andrew and Kimani were relentless in attack. Winning tackle after tackle to keep the ball in the UAE half and peppering the goal with an array of shots. With two minutes to go Yahya pulled one back and with the last kick of the game Antonio equalised! 4-4.
Penalty shootout
The game was decided by a penalty shootout. Watched by about fifty adults. Each of our six takers (it went to sudden death) volunteered but unfortunately we lost.
The boys have been performing below par this season, losing 7-0, 8-1 and even 4-2 to the Year 7 team but they can actually be very pleased with this performance.
Five Year 7 students, Dylan (GK), Dylan (midfield), Idris, Jesse and Dario were called up to start in the Year 8 team and they did not look out of place. As a group they actually added some much needed maturity to the team.
As for the Year 8's who kept their places there had been a marked improvement. A sense of team work and a willingness to want to improve is clearly evident.
