Queen Mary University STEM Day for Year 12
Our Year 12 Biologists and Physicists visited Queen Mary's University London, a top Russell Group university, for a STEM Day recently.
Students embarked on a day of lectures and laboratory visits, with question and answer sessions and a campus tour too. We would like to thank Queen Mary’s University for providing our students with such an insightful experience into what life at university is like.
What students said...
"I went to two lectures - a maths one and a physics one. The physics one consisted of how particle accelerators worked, such as the hadron super collider at CERN in Switzerland. The maths lecture taught us about how maths is utilised in the world of physics. The example that was shown was about how maths can be used to calculate and prove the theory of spaghettification (vertical stretching and horizontal compression of objects) when being sucked into a black hole. Overall, the trip showed us some very interesting components of the subjects that we had chosen." Hector, Physics and Maths student
"We first had a lecture about the behavioural patterns of dinosaurs. We looked at the specie of a ceratopsian, Protoceratops, an extinct dinosaur, the patterns for which show their fast growth in their horn. We also looked at death patterns of the T-Rex, and how the bundles of fossils they find about multiple T-Rexes do not indicate that they hunted in packs, but rather it could have been something such as water poisoning, leading to them dying in a similar area." Rehan, Biology student
"We did experiments such as microscopy where we saw red blood cells and compared them to red blood cells of a person with sickle cell anaemia. We also had physiology labs where we measured the oxygen concentration in our breath. We did an ECG test by lying down on the floor and electrical signals would be sent to the heart to help measure your heart rate. These experiments were fun to do while seeing an interesting side to human physiology testing". Zahid, Biology student
