HBAED Celebrates British Science Week 2025
Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich recently marked British Science Week 2025 with a series of engaging activities centred around the theme "Change and Adapt."
The week-long celebration aimed to inspire students across Key Stage 3 by immersing them in the dynamic world of science through hands-on experiences and explorations. The British Science Week celebrations exemplified the school's commitment to providing enriching, hands-on scientific experiences. By actively engaging students in diverse activities, the academy cultivates a culture of curiosity and lifelong learning in the sciences.
Scavenger hunt and practical lessons
To kick off the festivities, Key Stage 3 students participated in a science-themed scavenger hunt designed to encourage critical thinking and teamwork. The interactive challenge led students through various stations, each presenting puzzles and questions related to scientific concepts, fostering a spirit of inquiry and discovery.
Complementing the scavenger hunt, students engaged in practical lessons that brought scientific principles to life. One highlight was the construction of scribble bots, simple robots crafted using everyday materials that demonstrated basic engineering and circuitry concepts.
Students also explored water filtration techniques, gaining hands-on experience in understanding the importance of clean water and the science behind purification processes.
Year 7 trip to the Horniman Museum
Year 7 students embarked on an educational trip to the Horniman Museum, renowned for its diverse natural history exhibits and interactive displays.
The visit provided an opportunity for students to delve into topics such as biodiversity, adaptation, and environmental change, aligning seamlessly with the week's overarching theme. Engaging with the museum's collections enriched students' understanding of the natural world and the scientific processes that shape it.
Year 7 assembly: "Change and Adapt"
On Thursday, 27 March, Year 7 students gathered for an assembly centred on the British Science Week theme, "Change and Adapt." The assembly featured a captivating demonstration involving potassium permanganate, illustrating principles of chemical reactions and change. This live experiment not only captivated the audience but also reinforced the practical applications of theoretical scientific knowledge.
Invitation to STEM Club
In line with the week's events, Harris Boys' Academy extended an open invitation to all Key Stage 3 pupils to join the school's STEM Club. The club offers a platform for students to further explore science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through projects, experiments, and collaborations, fostering a sustained interest in these fields beyond the classroom.
