Renaissance Day, Wednesday 22 March 2017 - What's happening?

Our Year 9 boys experience Zazen meditation in art as part of our diversity day today. Enlightening...

Renaissance2

Renaissance Days form an important part of our curriculum offer to students. The days are entirely focused on Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education, Religious Studies and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural education objectives in order to give our students an understanding of the wider world and to enjoy new experiences outside of the normal school timetable.

Year

Activity

Year 7

Natural History Museum trip

An opportunity to learn about the variety and beauty of our natural environment, supported by our science teachers on will be on hand to give tailored tours to the wonderful exhibitions in the museum.

Year 8

Design and technology project

Superhero writing day

Selected students will not only be designing and manufacturing a new, unique product, but will also be working with business and maths teachers to market it and deliver it at profit.

Ever wondered how Hollywood superhero blockbusters are made?  Students will be creating their own unique characters to use in storytelling, possibly leading to a script in the future?

Year 9

Imperial War Museum trip

Science in cinema

What is diversity?

The history and art departments will take students into the IWM to learn about the multi-faceted approach to human conflict, and look at the way art and design has been used to relate the public to the conflicts.

How accurate is science in cinema?

How far is science fiction really ‘fiction’?

Students on this activity will be learning about the dramatic devices at play in some of the most popular films of the past decade.

Students will be reviewing the theme of ‘diversity’ and difference through dance, art, history, music and equality issues.

The visiting speakers for the day will be from the company ‘Diversity Role Models’.

Year 10

Kings College sports ground/on-site

The PE department will be hosting a one-day focus on sports science which is a key component for BTEC preparation.

All teachers within the academy have an input into our Renaissance Days, from planning trips or sessions to delivering content aligned with our PSHCE/SMSC objectives.

The days are used to enrich prior learning or to stimulate interest in something that is going to be covered within subjects during normal school time. The science department, for example, are leading a trip to the Natural History Museum to enrich students' prior learning about adaptation to the environment.

Renaissance Days play a vital role in enriching the study of PSHCE and Religious Studies, and allow students to experience something new and exciting while reinforcing past learning.
