Southwark Premier League - HBAED 3 Bacon's 2
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances the original Year 9 squad of 14 players was dramatically reduced to merely 10 at kick off. They took up the challenge to outplay one of the only teams to have beaten them last season, who had one of the top youth goalkeepers in London.
Controlled
The plan of action was to strategically pressurise the opposition but then also sit back at times in order to use energy efficiently. This led to the first goal, with Harry being played through the defence and following up his own rebound shot with his head. From here the players controlled the first half to make sure they kept the lead.
In the second half, the formation lost its shape as expected and two quick goals from lack-lustre marking put Bacons in front. With a man less it would be the logical bet that Bacons would go on to take the league fixture. However this 10 man team had another idea. The work rate and pressure on the Bacon's players increased dramatically, leading to winning battles in the midfield and through-balls leaving the hard-working forwards breaking through the defence.
Agility
After hitting the bar and the post, Idris slotted a 'two on one' past the on-rushing keeper to square the game. Not being content with a draw, Idris, Abdul, Harry and Dylan’s agility cut the defenders to give each a yard every time they got the ball. This presented space for an Idris strike that the keeper did well to parry. Fortunately this landed in the lap of Abdul who chipped it over the lying goal keeper.
Bacons tried to claw their way back in the dying minutes, however the team managed the final chances to take the win. A story of ten ambitious footballers! Thanks to Mr Butterworth and Mr Miller for their help.
