"Why We Like After-School Homework Club"
Our after-school Homework Club is becoming more and more popular with boys in all year groups. The club takes place in the school library every Monday to Thursday, with lots of computers the boys can use and a teacher to ask if they need support.
“I think the boys like Homework Club because they know they will actually do their homework if they come here,” says Ms Maldar. “They find it easier to focus on it in a school environment. I think they also like having an adult in the room who can guide them if they get stuck.”
Ms Maldar keeps the atmosphere relaxed and it’s fine to chat to your friends as long as you’re not disturbing other people, says Jakub, Year 7 (pictured above, left). “It’s more fun doing homework here because you have your friends sitting next to you and you can talk about it. I also come to homework club because sometimes my computer at home doesn’t work and sometimes I can’t find a charger, but I know the computers here will work.”
Jakub likes having an adult on hand for support too. “I can ask a teacher if I have a question rather than always getting it wrong,” he says. “Today I’m doing Maths homework online.”
Ms Maldar also supports students who don’t have English as their first language, such as Nicolas, Year 9, who comes from Ecuador. “I like that I can get support with my English,” he says. His friend Carlos (pictured above), came from Bolivia but grew up in Spain. “I come here to finish off what I don’t have a chance to do in lessons," he said. "I come twice a week and I prefer to work here with friends.”
Homework Club is open in the school library 3-5pm on Monday and 3-4pm on Tuesday to Friday. Come and try it!
