Nine Boys Honoured in Nationwide Maths Challenge

Hari Maths ChellengeWe're delighted that nine students were awarded certificates in the Intermediate Maths Challenge (UKMC) run by the United Kingdom Mathematics Trust - receiving either a bronze, silver or gold certificate.

Hari (pictured), who was awarded a gold certificate, will also go through the next stage and enter the very challenging Pink Kangaroo Challenge (named after the Australian organisation that started it).

The Intermediate Maths Challenge is a nationwide competition to stimulate mathematical problem-solving. We enter boys from the top Maths sets in Years 9 and 10.

"Strongest subject"

“The last two years I’ve got Silver so this year I wanted to get Gold,” says Hari. “When I got it was a big relief! Maths is my strongest subject. I’m able to grasp the different topics well and I’ve never found it hard.”

Students have to answer up to 30 questions in one hour but lose points if they get them wrong, to discourage guesswork. Students needed 71 points to get a gold certificate and Hari smashed it, achieving 93 points.

“We enter boys for this challenge because it allows them to see the beauty of Maths and use their problem-solving skills in algebra, probability, shapes and angles, for example,” says Maths teacher Ms Abdulaahi. “They can push themselves outside of the GCSE curriculum and get a taste of what A Level Maths will be like.”

Congratulations to all our certificate-winners

Maths Year 10

Kangourou sans Frontières (KSF) is an independent association, whose purpose is to organise the annual Kangaroo contest with the aim of promoting mathematics among young people around the world. The name sounds strange, but recognises the fact that the organisation was inspired by the Australian Mathematics Trust. Each year over six million school pupils aged 5-18 from more than 50 countries throughout the world take part at various levels. So Hari will be taking part in a competition as part of a huge community of gobal maths students

Next up: Junior Maths Challenge, Year 7 & 8, Tuesday 30th April.
