"Be The Light in the Darkness" - Holocaust Survivor Eve Kugler Inspires Boys and Staff
In tribute to Holocaust Memorial Day on 27th January, all students from Year 10 and 11 listened to the testimony of Eve Kugler.
Eve spoke about her experiences of living in Germany, living under Nazi rule and miraculous escape to New York. Eve’s testimony had a profound impact on both staff and students as you can see below.
Reading the student and staff reflections will tell you more than I ever could about the impact of Eve’s talk.

I believe learning about the Holocaust is important as we can reflect on a tragic event in the past, and gain knowledge from experiences and hopefully prevent it from never happening again.
A Holocaust testimony is a powerful and unique experience as it quite a sensitive and very long lasting topic, so to hear from someone who has lived and survived during such difficult times is very saddening yet interesting.
I personally enjoyed the live broadcast and hearing from Eve through her experiences, the fact that she was so brave and confident to tell us as strangers and tell us in detail of her last trauma is truly amazing.

Learning about the Holocaust is fundamental in the understanding of the tragic events which occurred in Nazi Germany. Today, we were privileged enough to hear from a survivor who experienced the events first hand and really delivered a sense of reality which a textbook or YouTube video could not provide.

I think it is important to learn about the Holocaust because we have to remember the atrocities committed during that period. We must spread these memories as a legacy of the people who were stripped of basic human rights by an immense political power. A testimony from a holocaust survivor is a unique experience because of the realism it brings.

The Holocaust was a disturbing point in history, the most disturbing. As a student in Harris Boys' Academy, I have always understood what the Holocaust was, but only through secondary sources (textbooks and texts). This naturally limited my understanding. But this heart-breaking testimony makes me very-aware of how cruel the Holocaust was and what the Jews had to go through, but most importantly it allowed me to fathom how strong the Jews were, even though the state were against them they still pushed forward in search for freedom both for themselves and their family. This testimony is important due to the fact events like this must be remembered so that history never repeats itself.

Year 11 were engrossed in Eve’s story throughout the session with Cristobal blown away with her life story. The students found it hard to fathom her journey at such a young age especially in relation to their own life journeys. Gean-Carlos said she “was an incredible lady” and that they will all continue to share her story as requested by Eve.

Listening to Eva’s eye-witness account of what happened to her and her family during the Holocaust was truly a remarkable opportunity. Eva’s thought-provoking and informative account of the events that followed the raid on their family apartment, her parents being sent to concentration camps and being separated from her siblings once crossing the Atlantic waters was incredible. You could see the strength she drew to relive those horrific times. Truly an inspirational women who left us with a vital message: “be the light in the darkness” and continue to speak about anti-semitism and racism because when you listen to someone’s witness testimony you too become a witness and ensure that such events are never forgotten, nor are they to be repeated again.
