HBAED Students Win Windrush Foundation National Short Story Prize
Two students from Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich have won a short story competition run by The Windrush Foundation.
The Sam King Windrush Awards invited young people across the country to produce an outstanding essay about the Caribbean men and women who travelled on the MV Empire Windrush and arrived at Tilbury Docks on 22 June 1948.
Participants were asked to submit a hand-written essay of no more than 400 words, which would be judged on its literacy, expression, creativity and how it celebrated imagination.
Year 9 students Nate and David wrote phenomenal essays describing life aboard Empire Windrush and were delighted to receive a personalised trophy and a £100 gift card for their efforts by the co-founder of the Windrush Foundation himself, Arthur Torrington (pictured above).
It's a significant feat for the boys and we are all exceptionally proud of them.

Students had to also consider the visual appearance of the entry as well as the quality of the content. Many students entered, writing essays on topics which included The Ship (Empire Windrush), The Departure, The Journey, and The Arrival.
A special thank you to Arthur Torrington and all staff at The Windrush Foundation who made this possible.
