Harris Rugy Team Excels In First Ever Matches
Wednesday was a cold, wet and windy day. In other words, the perfect conditions for a rugby tournament, and a combination of seven Year 7s and 8s excelled in their first ever rugby matches against a handful of other local schools.
Despite never having played a rugby match before, and up against vastly more experienced opponents, the Harris Boys’ team of Marley, Joel, Harley, Nathaniel, Gustavo, Muhammed and Samuel secured a well-deserved comeback win against Haberdashers.
Muhammed scored the equalising try before Joel went over the line to deliver the victory. A very strong performance from all players, in particular Joel and Marley who were orchestrating the attacks.
In the second match against Bacons, Harris Boys', built on their positive opening with a glut of tries again from Joel and Muhammed. Unfortunately, this time the attacking brilliance wasn’t matched by the defence and Bacons ran out comfortable winners in a high scoring game.
The final match came against overall winners Sacred Heart and was a classic display of defensive resilience. Sacred Heart dominated the territory and attacking drive but were repeatedly stopped by heroic defending from all across the defensive line.
All over the pitch there were Harris players putting their bodies on the line, Gustavo, Harley and Samuel made brilliant tackles in the corners, Marley stopped everything through the middle, Joel repeatedly flattened players twice his size and Nathaniel and Muhammed were always a threat on the counter attack.
It ended up being a counter attack that gave Harris a shock lead after a poor pass from Sacred Heart was intercepted and a full length breakaway try was scored. It looked as though Harris would pull off a shock win, but in the last play of the game the defence was finally breached and Sacred Heart stole an equaliser to draw the game.
A brilliant afternoon and hopefully the first of many successes for our rugby team.
