'Growth' - Our Events for British Science Week 2022
We celebrated British Science Week from 11-20th March with all Key Stage 3 classes (Years 7-9) having lessons separate from their normal curriculum and focussing on a topic around this year’s theme of ‘growth’.
This is always a fun week to explore interesting and engaging parts of science that might not otherwise appear on our curriculum, with the Science team teaching lessons about areas of science they are particularly passionate about in order to enthuse students.
This year's theme of 'growth' was fitting for what has been a turbulent time for all of us. ‘Growth’ links with multiple areas across science, technology, engineering and maths. Growth is all around us, whether it's plant growth in a window box, our own personal growth over the last twelve months or impacts of economic growth on our society.
In assemblies during Science Week, our central theme at HBAED was 'Growing Scientific Understanding' and how Science has grown historically. Mr Russell delivered assemblies based on this and the courage and confidence people showed in history to look at questions others thought unconventional or just plain weird at the time. This is very relevant today as scientists ask difficult questions about now to address some of the biggest issues faced by humanity.

Students also engaged in lessons which went beyond their normal curriculum and explored different aspects of science. These were all around the theme of ‘growth’ including:
- the impacts of economic growth on our society and how as humanity grows we are changing the world around us
- population growth and urban development; how are cities and buildings are growing to keep up with
- growth of a hive in the lifecycle of bees
- how we can meet the growing demand for energy in an eco-friendly way
- the growth of an ecosystem
