Students Love Our Role Playing Games Club
In our popular Role Playing Games Club we use a variety of games to develop creative skills (character and story creation), problem-solving, teamwork, leadership and confidence.
Hunt a Killer
In this immersive detective mystery, students take the role of the investigators trying to solve a murder case. In an episodic fashion, students sift through a treasure trove of evidence: coroner/toxicology reports, witness statements, photo and video files and physical evidence found at the scene of the crime.
The game presents an opportunity to broaden the students’ knowledge in a variety of subjects such as science, literacy and numeracy. A notable example can be seen in the image here, where students researched and learnt how to solve a Diffie-Hellman Key Exchange in order to break a complex code in a hidden message.
Honey Heist
A great way to introduce new players to dice-based table top role playing games, this game offers an easy to learn system with plenty of role playing opportunities.
Players take on the roles of bears, organising and executing a heist for the rare black orchid honey. Creative problem-solving and teamwork is essential to overcome complex problems the Game Master (Miss Tsiknaki) has prepared, from disabling the security system and preparing the escape plan to elaborate disguises and feats of deceit. Students are able to utilise their literature knowledge to gain game advantages through the use of cut scenes and flashbacks.
Ten Candles
This game is perfect for students wanting to develop their skills in building a narrative. Set in a world where everything has gone dark and the mysterious ‘They’ have arrived, students embark on a journey to unravel the mystery and escape.
Dice rolling is primarily used to assign the narrative power either to the Game Master or the players, influencing the course of the story and developing both literacy and numeracy skills. Our game was set in a dystopian version of HBAED where the players were trying to escape the school and uncover an evil plot to reduce the human population in order to prevent climate change.
Dungeons and Dragons
Using everything the players learn from the previous games, we have moved on to Dungeons and Dragons, the most famous table-top role playing game. This one has a heavy numeracy focus - the stats/skills of the characters and everything they do is governed by a complex set of rules with a heavy focus on dice rolling and mathematical calculations.
The world is controlled by the Games Master (Miss Tsiknaki) and the players are trying to use their abilities to complete a series of quests. All the students have shown excellent focus and have developed their teamwork to accomplish their task as an adventuring party and are looking forward to continuing their campaign next year.
