Mathematics Competition Celebrates Key Stage 3 Mathematicians
Our Key Stage 3 Mathematics Competition is a reminder of the unifying nature of Mathematics, reflecting our theme of 'Mathematics, a language beyond numbers'.
Mathematics has allowed us to access the deepest potential of our human capabilities, but even mathematicians sometimes forget its simplicity. So, for this reason our competition celebrates mathematics in literacy and real-life situations.
This brilliant idea to showcase academic excellence in this way came from an annual competition in Jamaica, the School Challenge Quiz. Inspired by this example, the Maths Department and other teachers at HBAED decided to host their own version of the competition.
The competition started off with 400+ students participating in the in-class round. From this pool of students, the top six from each class were selected to represent their class in the knock-out rounds. Of the 21 teams (126 students) who competed in the knock-out rounds, four teams advanced to the semi-finals for each year group (7 to 9).
At this stage of the competition, the winning team from each band advanced to the Grand Finals, to compete for the title of being the Math-Maniacs of their year group.
The Grand Finals were held on 21 November 2022 in front of an audience of parents of participating students, Executive Principal Peter Groves, Head of Academy Chris Brett, Vice Principal, members of Senior Leadership Team and other members of staff.
The competition comprised of three rounds for each year group. The third round introduced a buzzer to the already competitive environment, with students having to press the buzzer to respond to a question - losing two points for a wrong answer and gaining two for each correct response.
The assembly hall witnessed a nail-biting finish to the KS3 Mathematics Competition with B-Band leaving victorious after a riveting academic show-down.
