Penalty Drama As Unstoppable HBAED Make Cup Progress
Residents of Mile End Falcon Works (apartments overlooking Mile End Stadium AstroTurf) were treated to a goalfest in the third round of the Inner London Cup.
HBAED arrived full of confidence but were shocked within 20 seconds as Bishop Challoner crashed a half volley into the roof of the net. What happened over the next 69 minutes 40 seconds was the embodiment of resilience and personification of a winner's mentality.
First, Rayane rifled a left footed shot into the corner after quick thinking from Aaron and a good cross from Oliver to level the score. Second, after Bishop Challoner took the lead again Oliver swept home a 1v1 to equalise.
Third, Bishop Challoner scored another brilliant goal, before Aaron levelled again. With moments to go in the first half, a Bishop Challoner corner dropped in the box before it was drilled into the net to send HBAED in at half time 4-3 down.
HBAED started the 2nd half with similar irrepressibility, Aaron sprinted down the left wing and arrowed a drive in at the near post to equalise again. The game tightened up with no big chances falling to either side until a long free kick Hamed was sliced straight into the path of Oliver who volleyed HBAED ahead in the match for the first time. With ten minutes to go, a fifth screamer from Bishop Challoner took the score to 5-5 and three stunning saves from Ibrahim kept HBAED in the game and sent us to penalties.
Five volunteers bravely stepped up to take responsibility: Oliver scored, Aaron scored, Daouda scored, Casper scored and a final nerveless penalty from Omar sealed another dramatic win and the whole team's resilience paid off.
The match finished 5-5 & 5-4 on penalties to HBAED.
