Year 10 GCSE Art Students Visit 198 Contemporary Arts and Learning
The Year 10 Fine Art GCSE students enjoyed a trip to 198 Gallery in Brixton, where they were received a tour of the gallery space and exhibition by curator Rianna Jade Parker.
Rihanna explained the fascinating history of 198 Gallery and the experience of the African Caribbean community in Brixton during the 1980s. The students were then talked through the exhibition by the Jamaican artist Errol Lloyd.

"I would say that the trip to the 198 Galley was very informative, mostly because there were facts we, as art students, could take back and incorporate into our own pieces. We also learnt a lot about the struggles black artist had to deal with in order for curators to exhibit their works a few decades ago, which is Rihanna’s (the curator of Errol Lloyd: A Life In Colour) motivation to promote black artists with exceptional talent, such as Errol Lloyd and to diversify the creative arts industry. It was an exceptional trip which gave myself and the other Art students an in-depth visual representation of the possible outcomes of Art whilst also giving us ideas for the contexts we could use to inspire our own pieces."
About the Errol Lloyd exhibition
"With this timely retrospective, we celebrate the lifework of pioneering Jamaican artist, Errol Lloyd and his contributions to the visual and literary culture in Black Britain. In the largest survey to date, all aspects of his artist career will be presented, including works rarely or never exhibited before. His iconic portraits of nominal figures such as poet James Berry and activist-scholar Walter Rodney and women in his family. Also featured are Lloyd’s bronze busts of friends and colleagues including writers Linton Kwesi Johnson and John La Rose, as well as conceptual works inspired by his travels and lively scenes from Notting Hill Carnival over the years. Lloyd has exhibited his paintings widely and has illustrated and written twenty books for children, many of which will be on display alongside his sketchbooks and personal ephemera."
