HBAED Hosts Southwark Schools Chess Competition
The Southwark Schools Chess Competition, hosted by HBAED earlier this month, was a thrilling event for all 31 participants from six different schools. The competition saw eight teams competing for the championship title and it was an afternoon full of intense chess matches and excitement.
The chess players came from different schools around the area: Charter East, Kingsdale, Ark Globe, Compass, Westminster and HBAED. The students were divided into eight teams, with each team consisting of four players. HBAED provided three teams, the vast majority from Year 8 and Year 7.
The competition had two rounds, with a group round followed by knockouts for each level of player. The players' skills and strategies were on full display. The matches were intense and there were a lot of close games.
A fine performance from all HBAED teams saw them placed 2nd, 4th and 5th in the group competition. This was narrowly won by the Kingsdale team, who also provided the individual winner after a great final against HBAED's own Alfie.
This was a fantastic opportunity for young chess players to showcase their skills and engage in friendly competition. It was a day filled with sportsmanship, fun, and camaraderie, and the students had a great time.
We hope that this event will become a regular addition to our chess calendar. The participants and their schools should be proud of their achievements, and we look forward to seeing them back soon for another exciting competition.
