Southwark Tigers Year 7 & 8 Rugby Festival

Konstantin, Year 8, reports on a memorable day for our rugby team at the Southwark Tigers Year 7 & 8 Rugby Festival.

The day started and the Harris Boys’ rugby team were ready to go. The atmosphere on the bus was light hearted as the team hyped each other up.

When the team got to the grounds, they started by doing some drills. The drills consisted of passing down a line where they could practise their passing and catching as well as their communication with each other.

Rugby Tournament

After ten minutes of practising their skills their first opposing team arrived and were ready to go. The game started of with a bang with our captains Malcom (Year 8),Christian (Year 8) and Konstantin (Year 8) got the team into shape.

Konstantin got the team to make a defensive line which worked very effectively. With a bit of passing Malcom got the team's first try by pushing through St Michael's defence. After that the team were pushed on by Mr. Humphreys and Mr. Belcher's encouragement the team ended up scoring even more where Christian scored a lovely try running through St Michael's defence and Konstantin pushing through even though he had multiple St Michael's players on him and scoring the try.

The team ended up winning against St Michaels with the score standing 4-2. The game ended and the two teams shook hands and congratulated each other for playing well. Even though Harris boys rugby team were far from the academy they still displayed excellent active citizenship.

The day continued and the team had a five minute rest where Mr. Humphreys discussed who will play next and what we could do better. The next game came quickly and we were up against Bacons College. Bacons won a try first but with encouragement from the three captains we quickly scored two more tries getting back on top.

Christian turned on the speed and ran through Bacons' defence and scored us a try, impressing everyone. Malaki, Tidjane and Ahmed put in great tackles, stopping Bacons College in their tracks and giving us an opportunity to build up our defence.

During halftime Mr. Humphreys made some changes to the team taking out one of the captains, Konstantin, after he got injured. The team then went on to win the game 5-4. Oh and of course we can't forget Malcom’s display of strength scaring bacons college whenever he got the ball. The game ended and Harris took another victory adding on to their streak. The team shook hands, had a quick rest and got back onto the field.

The last match came and the team were confident on winning. Once again Mr. Humphreys made a few changes to the team and Konstantin gave some good advice on holding the defensive line and not to bunch up.

In the first five minutes St John’s were winning 4-0 which was not good. Malcom pushed through St john’s defence getting us a try as well as Christian running through their defence juking his way to the try line. Konstantin scored the try getting the team to five tries but the team would need two more to win.

With 10 minutes left on the clock the team put in an amazing effort with Juan making amazing runs alongside Rayion, Santosh, Musa, Herbie and Zubayr. Christian made a lovely run getting us within a metre of the try line and passing it to Noel who then scored the equalling try. The game ended a draw at 6-6. The two teams shook hands, congratulated each other on their skills and effort.

The tournament ended with the Harris boys winning two and drawing one. Well done Jaun, Santosh, Lansane, Malcom, Christian, Konstantin, Musa, Herbie, Noel, Zubayr, Rayion, Tidjane, Ahmed and Malaki for an amazing performance during the tournament and thank you Mr. Humphreys and Mr. Belcher for taking us to the tournament.
