World Book Day - Celebrating Our Love Of Reading
HBAED students celebrated World Book Day on Friday 3rd March by participating in a number of different activities to mark the occasion. Read on to see what they got up to.
Blind Date with a Book
In the library, students were invited to have a blind date with a book! For this, different books were wrapped in brown paper with clues about each book written on the front (pictured below). Without knowing which book they were picking, students then had to choose a book using only the clues to help them with their choices. This activity helped the boys to learn not to judge a book by its cover and expanded their literary horizons.
The Masked Reader
For this activity, each participating member of staff recorded themselves reading an extract from their favourite book in disguise. At the end of the extract, they said “can you guess who I am?” before taking off their disguise. Students had fun guessing who the different masked readers were, although they said some were easier to guess than others!
Story Through the Day
One exciting activity students completed, was being told The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe, broken down into small parts. Each part was read aloud to students at the beginning of each lesson throughout the day. The Tell Tale Heart is an exciting gothic short story with lots of suspense and a surprise ending so students got to experience the tension build up gradually throughout the day.
Drop Everything and Read
Lastly, students were informed that if they were seen reading around the school they would be rewarded five Harris Points.
Overall, HBAED had a fantastic World Book Day and celebrated with many fun and interesting activities. Next week, we will continue the celebration with a visit from Nicola Garrard, author of the young adult novel 29 Locks.
