What's it like to Study Languages at Oxford?
Many Year 11 Harris Dulwich Boys' students, currently engrossed in studying the Spanish language, set off on a fascinating trip to Dulwich College in November to meet students studying Modern Languages at Oxford University.
The Oxford students explained, in detail, what studying Modern Languages at university was like, what content was covered and what jobs could be opened to you by being bilingual or multilingual. It was an opportunity not to be missed!
At the event, the students were immediately tested on their analytical skills as they were tasked to analyse the importance of a poem called Bilingual by Rhina P Espaillat, which contained features of both English and Spanish language. The boys looked at the poem and discussed the difference it made to the poem that it was multilingual, rather than monolingual.
Through this, the students got a taste of what it would be like to be in a university classroom or lecture, and what tasks they would be asked to do if they studied Modern Languages at Oxford.
After this, the students watched a clip of a movie in a foreign language and took part in a riveting debate about whether movies and TV shows have taken over what literature used to be. The Harris Dulwich Boys students then had the chance to ask the Oxford students questions, giving them a greater insight into what everyday life was like at Oxford, specifically when studying a Modern Language.
Overall, the afternoon turned out to be a remarkable success as many Harris Boys’ students stated that they had not before considered taking a modern language as one of their subjects for A-Levels and even at university.
