Under 13 handball team reach London final
The u13 handball team travelled to Bexleyheath Academy to enter the 'East London' round of the National Schools Handball Competition today.
The team were competing against local rivals Woolwich Polytechnic and London Nautical, along with The Erith School for one qualifying place to progress to the 'London' final. The results were:
- Won 5-2 Erith
- Won 5-4 Woolwich Poly
- Won 9-5 London Nautical
- Won 6-1 Erith
- Drew 1-1 Woolwich Poly
- Won 6-1 London Nautical
Tense and exciting
The two most tense and exciting games came against Woolwich Poly. In the first game the boys came back from 3-1 down, then 4-3 down, to draw level with a late surge from Jordan and Connor. Connor then scored the winner with the last attack of the game.
In the second game against Woolwich the boys knew that if they avoided defeat the would have enough points to qualify.
Going a goal down early rocked their confidence and there was a brief spell of backs to the wall in the zone defence. Tyreece, Connor and Jordan putting their bodies on the line to block shots. Any that snuck through were expertly saved by Enry in goal.
After weathering the early storm the boys kicked on and Connor, who later was awarded the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, broke through the defensive line to power home a dramatic equaliser.
London final
The team are now through to the ‘London’ final. With a place in the ‘South of England’ final up for grabs for the winners.
Many thanks to Mr Assinder for providing the transport, the photographs and supporting the boys today.
