Year 11 Students Experience West End Magic with 'Matilda' Trip
On Friday, 4th October, a group of talented Year 11 Art, Drama, and Music GCSE students had the incredible opportunity to watch the West End production of Matilda The Musical.
The trip, organised by Mrs. Okai, was a chance for students to immerse themselves in the world of professional theatre and experience the magic of live performance—an unforgettable highlight in their GCSE journey.
The show, based on Roald Dahl’s beloved classic, left students mesmerised with its stunning choreography, captivating performances, and enchanting music by Tim Minchin. Many students remarked on how the creative staging and the powerful performances of the young cast inspired them, particularly those pursuing Drama and Music.
One Year 11 Drama student, said: "Seeing the characters come to life in such a dynamic way has really motivated me to push myself in our own school performances. The energy was just infectious!”
Meanwhile, one of the Music GCSE students, commented: “The music was so powerful, and hearing it live gave me a deeper appreciation for how each score drives the emotion of the scenes. It was really special to experience.”
School production
Beyond being a chance to marvel at the brilliance of the West End, the trip also served as inspiration for the upcoming Harris Boys School production of Matilda in March. Students who will be involved in the school’s own production are already buzzing with excitement after seeing the show firsthand. They are eager to bring their own unique flair to the story, particularly now that they’ve seen how professionals tackle such an iconic production.
Reflecting on the experience, Mrs. Okai shared: "This trip was about more than just watching a show; it was about showing our students what’s possible when hard work, creativity, and talent come together. I can’t wait to see how this motivates them in their own artistic projects.”
The upcoming Harris Boys production promises to be a hit. If the enthusiasm sparked by the West End trip is anything to go by, the school’s rendition of Matilda will be something special. Stay tuned for more details on how you can grab your tickets for the March show!
It’s safe to say, the Matilda trip was a resounding success, and the students left the theatre inspired, motivated, and ready to create magic of their own.
