Raising Awareness on Gender-Based Violence
This term, our Year 12 and 13 students had the privilege of attending an eye-opening assembly delivered by Bold Voices, an organisation dedicated to educating young people on gender-based violence and societal inequalities.
The session provided a crucial introduction to gender-based violence, using powerful statistics to highlight the prevalence of sexual harassment and violence experienced by students at university.
Through a thought-provoking discussion, students explored the broader concept of a 'culture of gender-based violence', covering key issues such as:
- Lad culture and its impact on attitudes towards gender
- Gender stereotypes and how they reinforce inequality
- Language that trivialises violence and its harmful effects
- The normalisation of competition and conquest around sex
- The dangers of spiking and the silencing of victims
The 45-minute talk also included survivor stories, providing real-life experiences that underscored the importance of challenging these issues. While no explicit content was shared, content warnings were given to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment.
This assembly was an important opportunity for our students to engage in meaningful conversations, reflect on societal attitudes, and consider their role in promoting positive change.
At Harris Sixth Form East Dulwich, we are committed to fostering a culture of respect, awareness, and responsibility, equipping our students with the knowledge to challenge harmful behaviours and contribute to a safer future for all.
