Mace Trip Highlights Built Environment Careers
Mace welcomed a group of 15 Year 9 students from Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich to its Gresham Road site in the City of London in March as part of their Open Doors 2025 initiative.
Kicking off with a presentation introducing Mace and its impressive portfolio of works, the students were given an overview of the Gresham Street development and all its intricacies, which included a Q&A session followed by a guided site tour both internally and externally highlighting various aspects of the build such as:
- The ‘circular’ materials approach used to minimise embodied carbon through the recycling and repurposing of materials and the removal of fossil fuels
- Sustainable sourcing of timber materials and accountability for other construction materials, such as concrete, glazing, and Terrazzo flooring
- Implementation of passive and low energy measures, including LED lighting and high-performance glazing, into the initial design
- The mixtures of natural materials, shapes and colours used to preserve the original structure including its iconic façade
- Creation of a new centralised atrium, allowing floods of light to pour across each level
- Multi-purpose indoor rooftop pavilion with panoramic views of St Paul’s Cathedral, seamlessly blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces
"For many of the students, this was their first 'behind the hoarding' experience and it really has given them an insight into what opportunities and possibilities could be available to them in the construction and built environment sectors," said Mr Khasruz.
