Year 11 - Harris Cup Final - HBAED 4 Peckham 2
On Monday, the Year 11 team got to play their long-awaited Harris Federation Cup Final against Harris Peckham.
The game was special for many reasons: Peckham are our fierce local rivals; they are also our friends; we won the cup in Year 10 so are the current holders; and it was to be our last game together as a team before the students move on into Further Education.
Confidence
We started full of confidence. Kai (GK), Tyrell and Marco (CBs) played triangles at the back which brought Peckham forward and created so much space for us to play. John cut in from the right and played a ball over the top for Chay to chase, he got there first , took a touch and then coolly finished with his weak foot to put us one nil up.
Shortly after we were two nil up. Six or seven passes on the right flank from Ahamed, Chay and Romeo to draw out the defence before Romeo played a whipped ball to the front post for Nathan to glance a header into the bottom corner.
Assured
Fifteen minutes in and the team were flying. First to every ball, assured touches and lots of possession. Just before half time and with John dribbling towards the goal, Sam, our left back, made a great run to left corner and screamed for the ball. He didn’t receive the ball but it drew both of their defenders across and allowed John to reverse a ‘no look’ pass through to Nathan who was unmarked on the edge of the penalty area. A sharp turn from the big man opened up the space and allowed a first time finish into the bottom corner. Three up at half time and in full control.
The game needed a Peckham goal and it came early in the second half. Their small, nimble winger showed good footwork out wide before cutting in, riding a couple of challenges and firing into the top corner. A good goal. However, this was to be our day and we soon put the game beyond reach. Tom, Mukthar and Ernest who battled for every single ball in midfield bullied the opposition and broke. Mukthar played the killer through ball to Chay who causally rounded the goal keeper before rolling the ball into the empty net.
Peckham got a consolation goal at the death but it was too little too late. A fine performance and a deserved win from a squad of young men that it has been a pleasure to coach this season.
Mr Connolly
Man of the Match. A brace each in a cup final. Fine finishing from Nathan and Chay.
Stepping Up. Captain fantastic! Not a stand out game for Marco but that’s because his team did it for him. A true leader.
