High Drama as Year 11 Beat Ark Walworth
Our Year 11 basketball team travelled over to Ark Walworth yesterday evening for a match, and when we arrived the sports hall was packed out with students from Walworth, which gave to an intimidating atmosphere for our boys.
But this did not seem to affect our Year 11s, who were dominant in the early stages. Joel, Rio and David outclassed Walworth, giving us an early lead. We were sloppy in defence, however, and Walworth had one big man making all the moves. We switched it up and Adrian came back to man-mark him and battled well, which stopped the points coming in for a bit. Ali came on and added a few extra points, stepping up from Year 10 and making an excellent debut for the year 11s.
Going into the last quarter we were 10 points up and then there was utter mayhem. We came out and fired four points on the board and unfortunately the boys thought the job was done. Walworth fired in basket after basket and there was nothing we could do to stop them. With 30 seconds left on the clock we were two points up and let Walworth in for a basket to level it up. There are no draws in basketball so we went to overtime.
Again we came racing out and scored two points to put us into the lead. Then with 15 seconds left and the game essentially won Walworth stole the ball from David and scored to level it up again. With 10 seconds left, we broke as fast as we would. David drove into the box, looking to make up for his mistake and was fouled.
In front of about 50 kids in one of the most intimidating atmospheres for a school game David had two free throws to win the game for us. He held his nerve and sunk the free throws on the buzzer to give us the win in a very entertaining game!
Mr May
Man of the Match: David was excellent, holding his nerve at tough times and providing the quality we needed to beat them.
Stepping Up: Ali came off the bench a year group up and was very impressive.
Hero: Adrian battled hard in defence against an excellent player to keep the score down.
