Fire Writing, Catapults and Other Cool Science
Writing with fire using sodium nitrate, making catapults from twigs, creating lava lamps and designing aerodynamic paper aeroplanes – just some of the activities that make our after-school Science Club popular with Year 7.
“It’s different from a science lesson because you can just enjoy the experiments and practical activity and we don’t have to write up anything,” says Callum.
David agrees. “It’s interesting to learn the scientific names for things and the club is about the more fun side of science. My favourite thing has been making square bubbles!”
Ms O’Connor, who runs the Science Club with Ms Castillo (pictured) says: “We do cool stuff to get the boys interested in science and they really enjoy that. We try and do things that they can do at home again maybe with their brothers and sisters, so they can get to do science at home as well.”
After painting a design onto paper with sodium nitrate solution, boys then light the solution with a taper and watch their design become revealed. Science Club takes place after school on Wednesdays. Come along next week and take part in cool science too!
