Give Rugby a Try, After School on Wednesdays
Mr Hutton started Rugby Club when he joined the school in 2015.
“Most boys have never had the opportunity to do rugby before so it’s giving them a taste of something completely different,” he says. “They love it. We’ve been getting 35-40 boys on a Wednesday.”
Boys meet on Peckham Rye just opposite the school for training and there’s a chance to play a match at the end.
“The teaching is fun and you always get to play a game at the end,” says Ben, Year 8. “Since I’m on the rugby team it’s good to come and train here. We’ve never done rugby in PE so unless there was a club I couldn’t play it.”
The school now has rugby teams for each year, who play against different Harris Federation schools and in other competitive matches too. “Some of the boys play sports such as football or athletics as well, but others live and breathe rugby,” adds Mr Hutton.
Mashood (pictured above with the ball) plays for the school and also for a club outside of school. “I like the speed and running into people. If a boy was interested in getting involved in rugby I’d say you should at least try it, because it’s fun to do, something different from football and the sports you already play.”
Come to the Rugby Club after school on Wednesdays to give rugby a try.
