HBAED Debate Team Reaches Semi Final
Thursday 27 February was a big day for Harris Boys' Academy East Dulwich, as we took part in a Harris Federation Debating Tournament.
Jordan, Malachi, Leon and Hector, our top champions from 7B1 (pictured below), were nominated to represent our Academy, facing and working in collaboration with five other schools.
The first motion we prepared for was a topic that is controversial, wide in scale and at the forefront of our current global issues: "This house believes that the best way to reduce climate change is to reduce the individual’s carbon footprint".
Our preparation involved extended research and practising key presentation skills such as rebuttals, points of information and floor questions. We are proud to report that we made it through to the semi finals.
"We grew in friendship and bonded as a group"
“Today was very enjoyable," said Malachi. "I would recommend debating to everyone. We were able to express our thoughts and opinions and support one another as a team, meaning that we grew in friendship and bonded as a group. There were times we had to think swiftly and on our feet as points of information came rapidly.”
Hector said: “I enjoyed winning the debate we prepared for on climate change. I also enjoyed working together as a team and helping each other build on our confidence.”
We missed a spot in the final by a fine margin conceding to Harris Academy Beckenham. “It was both nerve-wracking but exhilarating at the same time,” said Leon.
Nevertheless, we enjoyed the opportunity to express and debate our opinions. “I felt that it was a great experience, one that was competitive and challenging," said Jordan. "I would love to join the debate club, where you are allowed to express yourself and have fun challenging others at the same time.”
