Science and technology challenge for Year 8
Year 8 students will this year again be exploring the application of science, technology and maths in industry througn a project called Go4Set STEM, which is run in association with Network Rail and the University of Westminster.
At a special launch event at the University of Westminster on Friday 9 January, students faced two challenges: creating their own rollercoaster with limited time and materials; and a NASA spacecraft challenge! See pictures.
The students will now take part in a ten-week project at school, supported by a mentor from Network Rail and The University of Westminster, in a bid to achieve the British Association CREST award at Silver level.
The project will raise pupils’ awareness and highlight future career opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) at a pivotal point in their education. It will empower pupils to make informed decisions about subject and course options. The scheme aims to encourage positive perceptions of scientists and engineers.
Over the next ten weeks the boys will work as a team to produce:
- a professional report,
- a display stand,
- a model/prototype,
- a group presentation that they will deliver to a panel of assessors.
