London Lions Basketball Experience At Copperbox Arena
On a Wednesday evening in January, 46 Key Stage 4 and 5 students travelled to the Copperbox Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to see the London Lions Basketball Team play their FIBA Europe Cup tie against Bahcesehir Koleji, a Turkish basketball club based in Istanbul.
Our students had a thrilling and joyful evening as this was the first live event many of them had seen since the pandemic. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to see a live basketball game, meet some London Lions players and witness an epic European tie.
The game was played in a fun and noisy atmosphere at the Copperbox Arena, which added to the marvellous experience for our students. Unfortunately, the London Lions found the Turkish powerhouse Bahcesehir Koleji too strong as they went down 76-61 in the FIBA Europe Cup second group stage.
Many of our students dream of playing professional basketball for the London Lions one day, and if they continue to work hard, focus, and believe in themselves, they can fulfil their dreams!
The London Lions have recently announced their new Basketball Pathway for students Under 14, 16 and 18. The new pathway will provide a platform for players to develop their skills from early in their secondary school level through sixth form to university and professional basketball.
At Harris Boys Academy East Dulwich, we are in talks with the London Lions about joining this pathway so our students can start their career at the under-14 level and develop with us all the way up to professional basketball.
I’d like to thank the London Lions again for welcoming us to the Copperbox Arena. We hope to go again in the near future.
