Careers Trip to London's Tallest Building
A group of Year 9 students went on a careers trip this month to visit the City of London's tallest skyscraper, 22 Bishopsgate.
The focus of the trip was sustainability, the role of London as a global city and the possibility of future employment opportunities.
Upon arrival at the skyscraper, students were given a talk on the history of the property and the challenges of its construction. They were then invited to ask questions, and most of the students were keen to quiz the presenters on the building's sustainability credentials and to ask detailed points on the construction.
The students then went to the 56th floor of the property in lifts that travelled at eight metres per second (the fastest in Europe). The weather was excellent, and students had a 360 degree panaroma of Central London from the Docklands to Crystal Palace and from the West End to Wembley. They looked down on the Gherkin and made eye contact with the top of the Shard.
Once pictures were taken, students then had a chance to ask further detailed questions of the building management team and they learnt about the history of the City of London, how to market office space and who was most likely to occupy the floors.
A great success and further City of London trips are planned.
